He left home at the age of sixteen and moved to Houston, Texas to train as a machinist. He had a talent for Drawing, and some of his pen and ink artwork remains in the family to this day. Shortly after moving to Houston, he took an art course. He remained in Houston for around a year, but was unable to finish the art course. After that time, he moved to Elgin, Texas where he boarded in the home of Mrs. Augusta Landmann. There he met her daughter Elly Anna Anders-Landmann. He worked at odd jobs on the farm and in a blacksmith shop in that area for about two years. Leaving Elgin, he went to Vernon when he was nineteen. In Vernnon, he bought a home and opened up his own blacksmith shop. He saved his money until he had enough to ask Elly to marry him. She moved to Vernon and worked for around a year doing housework. They saved their money, and were then married on 8 May 1902.
