Shared note

John P. Williams appears in records for the Union Army enlisting as a private in Company I, Third Tennessee Cavalry on 11 Nov 1863 in Manchester, Tennessee. He was born in Coffee County, Tennessee. He professed to be 18 years of age. He had blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, and was five feet tall. He was mustered in 11 Nov 1863 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was credited to the 8th Congressional District of Tennessee. Notes said he was a refugee with no fixed residence. One record says he died 10 Dec 1863 in a hospital in Nashville. The record said he was not mustered. On 3 Aug 1865 there is a listing of pay due from enrollment ($300). A note at the bottom of the record says he died in the hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. The hospital record said he died and was buried 29 Nov. 1863. He was interred in grave 5667. His residence before enlistment is listed as Coffee County. He was not married, and died due to congestion of the brain. He had appeared to have lied about his age on the forms. It appears to say he was fourteen, but that was marked out and hard to read. Originally the age was spelled out, but marked out and changed to the number 18. Berry Williams gave his consent, signing with his mark, as did John. Other records also changed the age.
