He was educated in the public schools in Erath County where the pupils sat on log benches. After that he attended the Polytechnic Institute at Mexia, TX for six months. He left there in 1881 and taught school until 1886. After studying law he was admitted to the bar May 14, 1889. He practiced law in Dublin, Texas. He served six terms (twelve years) as City Attorney. He is included in a list of attorneys that practiced in Erath County, and he is referred to in that list as a District Attorney. (Perry, H. G., Grand Ol' Erath The Saga of a Texas West Cross Timbers County, 1974-Vol. I, p. 193 & 224.) (Was this the same as County Attorney?) In 1908 he moved to Aspermount after being elected the County Attorney of Stonewall Co . TX. He served two terms (four years) in that office. In 1913, he was an attorney in Stanton. He practiced at Olney, Young Co., TX after August 1923. His office was located in the First National Bank Building there. He also served in the Texas National Guard as a first lieutenant of Company L, Second Regiment.
