farmer

Shared note

He went with his family to Ellis county where they settled when he was 17 years of age. Later he moved to Swisher County.
He was in the milling business. The mill was on the public road approximately halfway between Tulia and Silverton. It was called the halfway place, and freight wagons used to stop there to spend the night. On Friday morning, 17 February 1921, a gasoline engine at the mill caught fire. While he was attempting to put the fire out John Mackoy's clothes ignited. On Saturday night he died. The body was shipped back to Ennis where the funeral was held in his mother's home. (Information from Gaylon Fry and Dathene Vineyard, Biographical Sketch of John Pratt Mackoy, originally in a "Swisher County History" publication). Later information from the courthouse sent by Zoe Smith in Swisher County to Gaylon Fry says he died on 17 February 1922.

Census:
1870; Census Place: Precinct 2, Greenup, Kentucky, page 12
90/81, MaKoy, John L., 39, m, w, farmer, real estate $11,000, personal property $1200, KY, male citizen
----, Mary E., 36, f, w, housekeeping, KY
----, Mary S., 16, f, w, seamstress, KY
----, Amanda, 10, f, w, at home, KY
----, John P., 9, m, w, works at home, KY
----, Thomas D., 4, m, w, KY
----, Sarah A., 1, f, w, KY
Ravenscroft, Eliza, 12, f, w, house servant, OH
----, Jasper, m, w, laborer, Ohio
Hughes, Elizabeth, 19, f, w, domestic servant, KY
Samlin, Jacob, 29, m, w, laborer, France
Tibbs, Isaac, 17, m, w, laborer, KY
NOTE: Samuel S. Pratt lived next to the MaKoy household. He was aged 27. There might be a relationship to Mary E. MaKoy. Ephraim Morgan, aged 38, lived with his family in family 85 on the same census page and the one following. Might there be a relationship to the Morgan family of Mary Lee Morgan? That Morgan family, and another one on the page after the Makoy family seemed to have all been born in Ohio, so would probably not be close relatives of Mary. Another person of interest on the preceding page is the following:
87/78, MacKoy, Hannah L., 66, f, w, farmer, $7000, $1000, East Virginia
----, Thomas, 56, m, w, $0, $7000, KY (he had a medical condition which is hard to read. It might be idiotic, weak mental or something similar), male citizen, denied voting rights
This family also had two servants, one of whom had a child. Next to her was another family of interest:
86/77, MacKoy, Henry C., 36, m, w, farmer, $8000, $2000, KY, male citizen
----, Samantha, 35, f, w, housekeeping, Ohio
----, William H., 13, m, w, attending school, OH
----, James B., 11, m, w, attending school, KY
----, Hannah L., 9, f, w, attending school, KY
----, Moses F., 7, m, w, attending school, KY
It appears that this last family was in OH at some point, although Henry was born in KY. Then they returned to KY. There is a possiblity that these three MacKoy families were related. Henry might be John's brother, and Hannah might be his mother. Was Hannah a widow caring for her husband's disabled brother, or might he have possibly been her husband (although this is unlikely considering the age differences).
