Shared note
|
He is W. Elbert only on his grave marker. He was buried in "Old Lodge" cemetery, also known as Mt Zion Methodist Cem., located on County Rd 50 about 1 1/2 miles East of Honoraville, AL. An interesting note from Broyce, Apr 1992, "I think it might help if I explain the relationship between the Mason's Lodge and the church as they co-existed following the Civil War on on into this century. I don't know why it was always a Methodist Church co-existing with Masonic Lodges, but that was my observation. I don't see that same relationship now-a-days. But back then wherever you saw a Methodist Church, it was always a two-story structure. The Masonic Lodge occupied the top floor, and the Methodist Church the bottom floor. The land on which the Mt. Zion Methodist Church and the adjoining cemetery is was deeded by Theophilus Jackson Daniel, I think in 1871, to the Camp Creek Lodge No 251, F&AM. When the Lodge moved to Honoraville, that left the Mt. Zion Methodist Church and the adjoining cemetery. The cemetery was known almost exclusively as the Old Lodge Cemetery until more recent years, it has become known to greater extent as the Mt Zion Methodist Cemetery. |
