The following obituary was apparently written in a Mexia, Texas newspaper although Annie Laurie apparently died in Chillicothe, Texas shortly after the family moved there. She was sixteen years old when they moved, and also at the time of her death. (Did Ione Taylor's husband write this?) OBITUARY At 2 o'clock Sunday morning April the 9th, the grim monster--Death, collected the undisputable debt of nature from one of earths most promising flowers. Since Wednesday night the 5th, it was an event hourly looked for, and dreaded during the week, and when everything that Medical skill and loved ones could do, to stay the hand of death was done, but of no avail the summons came and sank the shaft of sorrow and regret into the hearts of many men, women and children here when the sad but unavoidable news came that Miss Annie Laurie Stuckey, was dead--the debt of nature had been paid and one more soul had taken its flight beyond the river of death. But why grieveth, for no human can expect to inhabit long this earth. Annie Laurie professed religion some three or four years ago and from that time she has lived a consistent christian life. She was possessed with a sweet lovable disposition always pleasant to all around her, and to "know her was to love her, " and at the last hours of her life, although her suffering was almost unbearable, she would revive up a little and would say "Oh blessed Jesus. This is the death of the righteous. Oh let us all die the death of the righteous and let our last end be like His." Time teaches us many lessons many of which are repeated so often, that we grow indifferent to them unless they are illusterated with some object around which the tendrills of our affections have become closely entwined So it is with death, the intuitive knowledge possessed by all that we are born to die lies latent in us until we are brought face to face with the fact that some loved one is passing from death unto life. "(this is unreadable) ey Annie Laurie has passed from death unto life." Annie Laurie you have left us here in the battle of life to take up an abide with God and the holy angels, where all tears are wiped from your eyes, where there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pa in. Hence we cannot even wish you back among us, but you will be missed at home, in church and in the community. We are separated, but not forever. Your God and our God will call us some day, and then we will meet around the great white throne above to part no more. Her tombstone says she was born November 28, 1882. |
