Newspaper article from the World War II era: Boys in Band of 36th Toot Horns Under Shell Fire They Lie in Tomato Patch Munching Fruit During their First Air Raid in Italy, Member Says " We went through our first air raid in a tomato patch," Tech Sgt. Edgar Skinner Jr., 1125 Proctor Ave., said in relating experiences of the 143rd infantry band, a former Waco national guard unit, in the Italian campaign. "We lay on our backs, watched the planes go over and ate tomatoes." "We were always right up under artillery fire," he continued. "We would go up and play for the different outfits, setup our public address system---we had everything, a portable stage, a small generator, two trucks, even a piano. Many time we had to stop a concert while the audience had to go and fire a mission on their guns. Then they would come back, sit down and we would finish the show. "The most unusual dance we played was near Sessa," he said. "We got four hospital ward tents and made one big tent out of them, then we built a stage at one end and decorated it with white and red-dyed gauze bandage. A dance platform was built in front of the bandstand and tables were placed all around it so that it looked like a nightclub. Nurses, Wacs and Red Cross girls were partners for the men," he related.... Obituary: Edgar Skinner Jr. Edgar Irvin Skinner Jr., 83, of Waco died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at a local nursing home.
