His will was dated 19 Aug., 1760 and filed in Brunswick-Greensville County, Virginia. It was noted as being in Meherrin Parish. This split off from St. Andrews Parish in 1753. St. Andrews Parish had been formed when the new parish split off of Bishop's Parish in 1720 at the formation of Brunswick County. The above mentioned will mentions his wife, Elizabeth, and his children who were William, Thomas, James, John, Joseph, Sarah Avent, Amy Avent, Rebecca Wise, Agnes Richardson, Mary Wise, Winnifred, Lucy, Betty, and Frances. A grand-daughter, Sharlotte is also mentioned. She was the daughter of his son James and his wife Elizabeth Rives. He left his son John land which adjoined his which he already owned. In addition, he left 1,280 acres to his sons William, Thomas, and James. To his son Joseph, either very young or else out of favor, he left 5 shillings. He also distributed seventeen slaves, named Jack, Ned, Princess, Doll, George, Phyllis, Bob, Hannah, Jacob, Simon, Josiah, Ben, David, Mingo, Abraham, Tibb, and Sam. In the later inventory of the estate on June 3, 1761, the names of Josiah and Princess are left out and the names of Sarah and Junius were added. The land of Joseph and his sons was centered upon Cattail Creek and its Massie Branch This is in the eastern portion of the southwest quarter of present day Greenville County, with the southernmost area around two miles north of the Virginia and North Carolina Boundary. North and east of here lived the Avents, Rives, Sykes, and Curetons. These families all intermarried with the Massey family. Joseph was better off financially than his brothers Hezekiah and Richard. He owned several tracts of land in Brunswick/Greensville County, Va. by the time he died. In his will he had nearly twenty slaves which were given to his heirs. |
