According to Mary Hughes, Mary Holland was from Holland, Georgia. Holland, Georgia was named for her family. Her parents and family died of yellow fever in the Civil War. She was reared by a half aunt. According to Mary Hughes, she was considered well educated for a woman living in her time. Her place of birth is listed as Missouri in census records. More research needed to see if this information is valid. Much of this story does not seem to be verified by the actual records. There is a Holland, Missouri, however, and this might be a good place to look. It is in Pemiscot County.Much of this family tale is up for questioning. Apparently she was in the Murfreesboro area around the time of her marriage. She is mentioned in a newspaper article in The Tennessean on 25 Dec 1877. On the previous Sunday evening, Officer Ed Foley was riding in a buggy on the Murfreesobor turnpike, about a mile and a half from the city. He was in a buggy, and his horses were scared and ran over Miss Mary Holland and Mrs. James Donelson. There were some ugly wounds, the article said, and the buggy was broken up. Was Mrs. James Donelson her aunt who reared her? There is a James Donelson buried at the Hermitage, home of Andrew Jackson. The dates are unknown, so I cannot determine if there is a connection. Andrew Jackson's wife was a Donelson, so this connection needs to be checked further. Another thing to search is Mary's education. Mary Hughes said she was well educated. There was a girls' school in Nashville that was nationally recognized. Research is needed to see if there was any connection to that institution. She is on a list of Death Certificates for Rutherford County. This is definitely her. Her name is misspelled, possibly, although that seems to be a spelling used by others. There appear to be families named Hollen in Tennessee and Missouri. Could that be how we will find them listed? We need to check that information to see if we can find the family listed under that name. More research needed. Her death certificate shows Mrs. Mary L. Williams. She was born in MO, although it appears to be written on top of Tenn. Her father was Will Hollend (MO) and her mother was Miss Donelson (No first name). The scan of the actual death certificate, appears to show her mother's birthplace as Tennessee, but that is not entirely clear. Originally they started to write an M, and then marked it out. Sallie Adkins of Murfreesboro was the informant. She was born 6 May 1856, and she died 22 Aug 1925. NOTE: Some census records say that her mother was born in Alabama. Most records say her father was born in Missouri, but at least one says his birth location is unknown. This is a clue that we need to consider. There is a William J. Hollend who served in Company K, Unit 23 Ky. Inf., a private at his induction and discharged as a Sergeant. He was a Union soldier. Apparently his name was also spelled William J. Hollan. Could this be her father? Mary and her husband may be in the census in Kentucky in 1880. Census: There is a very good chance that she is listed as Mary L. Hollin aged 17 living in Wilson County Tennessee. She is living with a family named Campbell, possibly the relatives she lived with following the death of her parents.
