Shared note
She attended the old Sumpter Street school. R. B. Cousins was the superintendent. One time she pushed a boy out of the double desk seat after he had been made to sit there as punishment. She did not "like it one bit, and got rid of him quickly." Being the youngest child, she became her father's helper around the farm. She milked four cows, fed hogs, and took care of the buggy horse before walking a mile to school. When she returned home, she did the same before doing her other chores and school work. She moved to Mart after she married W. A. Shanks and remained there until after his death in 1938. Then she moved back to Mexia and married J. A. Dease. (information from newspaper clipping apparently from Mexia newspaper, Mexia Resident tells Why She Has Managed to Live 86 years, 1968, provided by Robert Wells) Marriage Record M-322, performed by M. C. Fuller, JP for Precinct #3, 23 March 1911, Limestone Co. TX to Lon Lauderdale is questionable. She was married to William Shanks at that time. Also, it was before Mae Daniel married James Dease. Was this a different Mae Dease? There was a daughter born on 5 Feb 1919 according to birth records. I do not know which daughter this is. 1971: Mrs Mae Dease, 310 S. Bonham, Mexia, TX 76667. Obituary for Mrs. Mae Shanks Dease in "The Mexia Daily News" Wednesday, Dec. 20, 1972, page 5 number 299, volume 73 "Mrs. Dease's Funeral Set in Baytown" Funeral services for Mrs. Mae Shanks Dease, 90, of Baytown will be held at 2 P. M. today in Paul Lee Funeral Chapel in Baytown. Mrs. Dease died Tuesday in her daughters home in Baytown. Mrs. Dease was a lifetime resident of Mexia, having lived here until one and a half years ago. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lula Compton of Baytown and Mrs. R. H. Buechner of Houston; a son, Oscar Shanks of Houston; a stepson James A. Dease, Jr. of Mexia; and eight grandchildren. On her death certificate, the informant was her daughter, Mrs. D. M. Compton.
