Shared note

Peggy Strother gives his birth date as 1854 but Robert Wells says it is 1855.
He came to Texas with his family when he was ten years old. When his son or daughter asked if he rode in the wagons, he told him (or her), "...we children for the most part walked: the wagons were used for supplies" (Robert Wells, letter).
He started out for himself at 21, and bought land with his brother, William.
When he married (1889), he and his wife moved into a log house with two large rooms, two fireplaces, and two shed rooms across the back. Later they built two large log barns connected with a wide stall, horse stalls, seed houses, etc. The barn was still standing in 1974 when the previous information was written down. They built another house later. About 1914 they moved into town (Mexia) to send their children to school. In 1922 they sold everything and moved to Lubbock where they built a house at 50?? University; however, in two or three years they traded it in because of debt and crop failure. They ended up with a labor of land near Sudan and a 5-room house across from the Sudan school.
There is a note at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb by Louise Bates about John C. Wells and one of his brothers (older) covering a transfer of land 11/03/1875 from E. B. Smyth. (Robert Wells e-mail, 08 Feb 2001)
