He was picking corn on 31 October 1964 when the corn picker jammed. Without turning the tractor off, he got down to look for the problem. He put his hand on top of the picker and leaned over when his glove got caught and pulled his hand into the machine. Unable to get his hand free, he had to let it go through the conveyor as he tried to keep more of his arm from being pulled in, resulting in an almost severed hand. He was able to walk to the road where he got a ride to his home. Aunt Julia took him to Greenville, stopping to pick up Curtis Bowden who went with them. Hope had to have his right hand amputated about the middle of his forearm and wore a prosthesis the remainder of this life. Even without his hand, he was able to farm and operate numerous businesses.
