In 1839 he was on the tax roll for DeSoto County, Mississippi. On the same page were A. A. Massey, and his brother, James. He had $100 loaned on interest, one poll, and three slaves. He paid $2.50 in taxes. "James Greer loved nature and land. He came into the Chickasaw Indian lands years before the government treaty. He traded two ponies for the land he could walk off in a days time." (Information from Elizabeth Greer will, DeSoto County, Mississippi Probate Records; Children marriage in DeSoto County; and Mrs. Barby C. Ladd; and found in "Greer Kinsmen" by J. B. Bell.) This information came from the Parson's Internet site. Census: 1840, No township listed, DeSoto, Mississippi, Series: M704 Roll: 215 Page: 123 1,1,1,1,0,0,2,0,0,0,0,0,0, 2,1,1,0,1,1,0,0,1,0,0,0,0, no free colored persons, 2,2,0,0,0,0, 0,0,1,0,0,0, total 18 6 engaged in agriculture. Is this the correct person? There may be a slight discrepancy in age. He is living near James M. Massey. In his father's will he was residing in DeSoto County. When the property was divided, it was noted that A. Massey as administrator of his estate received $12 on 25 Dec 1849 for his share to equalize the value of the distributed slaves. He was also given $225 as the administrator along with slaves valued at $2000. (Mar 1850 hearing) In hearings on 19 Dec 1849 and Jan 1850, no mention was made of the death of James Greer in paperwork on distributions from the will. Among the papers for the James Greer estate, in the December 1855 term of the DeSoto County Probate court there was some action involving the heirs and minor children who were listed as David M. Greer, Martha J. Greer, and Nancy R. Greer. R. R. West was appointed as guardian ad litem for the said minors. In that hearing, the nature and situation of property in the estate of James Greer was such that due to that issue as well as the number of heirs, the land should be sold and the proceded distributed among the heirs. At that time, there were nine heirs to that estate. If there were nine heirs in December 1855, do I have too many children listed, or are some of the deceased at that time? Also, the son David has the middle initial of M. rather than the middle name of Waite. More research is needed here. The ages of some children appear to be incorrect.
