He is mentioned in his father's will which was processed Nov. 5, 1836. It says that he was "of Mississippi." (http://members.tripod.com/~SCROOTS) This resource does not seem to be available any more, and there is some question to its accuracy. The South Carolina Archives has a transcription of the Matthew Shanks will which seems to definitely be this family due to the names of the mentioned family members. It was witnessed (apparently when filed) in 1823, and written in Jun 1810. It mentions John Shanks, but does not say he is "of Mississippi." Family Search also has a scan of the will book, and it does not say that John was "of Mississippi." The actual will was probated in 1823, so the previous information appears to be incorrect. He is listed on the 1845 tax list in Holmes County, MS (Wiltshire, Betty Couch. Holmes County, Mississippi Pioneers, Heritage Books, Inc., 1993, p. 16. - Researched Jan. 20, 1999 in the Fort Worth Public Library.) He was listed in the 1810, 1820, and 1840 censuses in SC. He moved to Miss. by 1842. Peggy Strother says he is not on the 1850 Census. His wife Jane is on the 1850 census living with her daughter, Mary (Peggy Strother). He was also mentioned in the will of Richard Sproles (1845) (Wiltshire, Holmes County Mississippi Pioneers, p. 26.) Could he also be the John H. Shanks that served in the War of 1812 and in other military actions? Also, John H. Shanks is mentioned as having married several couples in Holmes County. (He is not referred to as a minister--perhaps he was a justice of the peace?). The age of his son David and the fact that David remained in South Carolina until after the birth of perhaps two sons, makes it appear that this is different from that John H. Shanks. However, he is living in the same county as David Shanks. So perhaps there is a connection?
