His father, Burrough Ebenezer Melear had a farm and slaves in Tennessee before the Civil War. He fought for the south, and while away, the Union troops burned his house and crops. He and his brother-in-law, Henry Kimes, loaded up their families in wagons and headed for Navarro County, Texas. The first Sunday morning on the trail he hitched up his wagon to leave camp, but Henry Kimes protested that he wouldn't travel on Sunday. Burrough said: "I'm not going to Heaven, I'm going to Texas". Burrough went ahead for several weeks straight and finally came to the Trinity River. The river was at flood stage, and the ferry could not operate. Burrough had to camp across the river from Navarro County waiting till the water receded. Finally when Burrough loaded his wagons on the ferry Henry came down the grade and got on the same ferry. Robert Henry Melear's father, B. E. Melear was Captain, Co. B, 8th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Xerox copies of his Bible record are in the d-b file. |
