He was known as "Glenn." After the third grade he and his family moved from Montgomery to Selma, AL due to their sewing machine business. They remained there for three years, after which they returned to Montgomery where he attended school for the seventh and eight grades. After that, they returned to Selma where he graduated from the eleventh grade and immediately went into the military. When he retired, he had been the winningest high school football coach in Alabama history. The stadium in Luverne, Alabama is named after him now. His story is told on the Alabama High School Football Historical Society website. It tells how he left high school where he had been a star basketball payer to serve in World War II. After the war, a friend recommended him to a college coach at the University of Kentucky where he played basketball his freshman year. During the summer he returned home, and the Selma basketball coach asked him to coach at Pine Hill High school. He accepted the job, and got his degree from Livingston University. After continual improvement, after four years the team was named State Champions by the Birmingham News in 1951. After eight years, he became the coach at Luverne where he coached for 38 years until he retired in 1992. He had spent 38 years in Luverne. His last 10 years there the team had been in the state playoffs, and they won the playoff state title in 1991. Although retired, he continued to help the coach, and they won another state title in 1997. When he retired, he had a record of 295-171-15 in 46 years, and was the winningest high school coach in history. In 1987, 1989, and 1991 he was named Coach of the Year by Alabama Sports Writers. In 1991 he was inducted into the Alabama High School Associations Hall of Fame, and he is also a member of the National High School Hall of Fame.
