On 5 May 1862 he went to Ft. Deposit & enlisted in Capt Moore's Co. as a private. On June 25, 1862, Hilliard's Legion was organized and Moore's Company became Co. D. He was elected First Sargent. He died in the military hospital in Montgomery. His father brought his body back to Greenville, and was the adm. of his estate.
