Peggy Jordan Bowman, Thelma's sister, told many tales of her sister who was seven years younger than the next child, Bonnie Dee Jordan. Apparently, Thelma or Delo (as she called herself for the middle name Adelia which she could not pronounce as a small child) was the original poster child for spoiled children. She had "tuffy " blond hair, but she would say, "I have long black curls, and if you don't believe it, just ask my daddy." The year that Delo started to school, Peg said that Bonnie Jordan Dial and she had to walk Delo home for lunch. Peg said that this was a real embarrassment to Bonnie and her because they were "upstairs" at school, meaning the upper grades which were on the second floor of the school building. Early in the school year after her sisters had walked her home to eat lunch, Delo cried and said that she did not want to go back to school. Her mother said to her father, "Dan, you'll just have to spank her and make her go." He responded by saying, "Then she'll never go!" And she didn't --she stayed out of school that year.
Family stories state that Delo went off to college at east Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas where her sister Pauline Jordan was teaching. Apparently eloping was big because she helped her roommate (whose father was the president of the college) do so, and then She and W. I. Bartley, Jr. decided to elope themselves. Stories say that both sets of parents had fits and had the marriage annulled. Delo left school, moved to Dallas, and decided to go into nurse's training. Later she was working as an RN in Canton, Texas when she became engaged to the young doctor. W. I. came through Canton and they eloped again, and this time they remained married!
Nancy Bowman Steinbach remembers that she enjoyed visiting them in their home in Pasadena, TX. W. I. loved to hunt, and there were deer skin rugs around the house on which she refused to step. She remembered that walking through the house was quite an adventure because she hopped around to avoid the rugs. Nancy also remembers that Delo worked for Dr. Wild who was Nancy's family doctor.
