Residence

First he lived near Lampasas for a few months, then he lived near Adamsville where he built a house from the walnut trees that grew on his own land. There is a historical marker on the house.
Military Service

He served 41 days of ordinary service; 1 muster roll dated S. 2-61 and 3 reports dated S. 20-61, S. 20-61 to D. 2-61, and D. 2-61 to Mar. 1-62. On 16 Sep 1861 he joined with Capt. Jones and 10 more men, pursuing Indians who had stolen 65 head of horses which were worth $6000, with the aid of a citizen Co. horses were recovered, but the Indians escaped.

He was one of the first ranchers of the Adamsville, Texas area.

He had fiery red hair and freckles.

Joseph Leland Straley is said to have come to Lampasas County in 1856, and he continued to live there until just before his 101st birthday. (Elzner, Jonnie Ross, Relighting Lamplights, 1975, p. 284, Lampasas Public Library) He was the one who donated the land for the family cemetery and the church near it. He also gave land for the school. (Ibid., p. 44) This is the land on which the family cemetery lies.

On 29 Feb 1862 he and a number of other men demanded money due for their service in the Lampapsas Minute Men from 2 Dec 1861 to 1 Mar 1862. HIs claim was for $24. (Texas State Archives record)

They had twelve children.

On his death certificate, he was a widower. He was born 21 Sep 1820 in Giles County, Virginia. He died 12 Sep 1921 in Adamsville, Lampasas, Texas at the age of 100 years, 11 months, and 21 days. He was in the farming industary. His father was Charles M. Straley, born in Virginia, but his mother's name and birthplace were unknown.
