He died when his daughter Elly was 1 1/2 years old. His parents died of typhoid when it struck the German colony in late 1885. Thomas tried to protect his family, so he tended his parents alone. After their death he helped bury them in a small cemetery west of McDade. He also fell victim to typhoid, dieing 16 Nov 1885. He was buried next to his parents and two children. Marie Augusta also contracted typhoid, and was unconscious for days. Neighbors took care of Elly and nursed Marie back to health. |
