He was a baker from the age of twelve, however, because of health problems he moved to a farm where he lived at the time of his marriage to Marie. He continued to bake the coffee cakes and stollen for the family every year at Christmas and other occasions according to Marie's stories. He also helped build the road to Austin. When he left Germany, it was over the objections of his mother. There was very little contact between him and his family following his departure. As a result of the situation, his parents disowned him. Apparently his mother had left him out of her will, and after her death in 1890, he received nothing. He filed a declaration of intent for naturalization in District Court of Bastrop County 10 Jul 1886.
