The household next to Thomas F. and Elvira, P.O. Mt. Willing, 1 Oct 1860, is shown as G. W. 20 and Mary 18. Household #1726 near Theo & Penny Daniel and their families is A. McCarthey 65m, probable wife M. 57f, D. 70m and their children: M. 19m, Z. 17f. etc. which would barely leave room for Mary Ann 18. George & his brother Wm. W. Daniel, married sisters on 28 Dec 1859. This newly wed couple appear on the 1860 Lowndes Co, AL census near George's brother Thomas F. Daniel. Joined Co. G, 13th Reg, Al Inf. on July 5, 1861, in Greenville. On Aug 15 he was at Camp Ruffin. He was captured and paroled in Ky sometime in 1862. After that he died in May, was buried in June 1862 per his service record. On July 19, 1861, all the recruits from the several counties who were recruited for this Infantry Regiment, were assembled at Camp in Montgomery and "mustered-in". A new regiment called "The 13th Regiment, AL Infantry. "Company G" apparently was a Butler county company. Maj. J. L. Calhoun apparently was the first Major of the 13th Regiment. (I have no info. as to where it operated prior to 1864) In 1864, they were fighting around Richmond, VA. Co. G lost it's Capt, C. N. Cook in the Battle of 2nd Cold Harbor and the Adjutant, L. P. Broughton of Butler Co, was killed in the battle of "The Wilderness" in Northern VA. The "invasion" of Kentucky occurred in the fall of 1862. Hilliard's Legion (organized in Montgomery) went into Ky in Oct 1862, and then retreated into Eastern TN. It's possible that the 13th Reg. might have participated in that operation. It started out with 1245 men and ended up with a small remnant of about 100 who were among those that surrendered to Gen. Grant at Appomattox. There is a statement on a muster roll card that says George W. Daniel was sent from Yorktown to the hospital. Yorktown is 60+ miles SE of Richmond. There was a battle there on May 1 1862. If George died before June 10, 1862, then he would not have been in the prisoner exchange in Kentucky in the fall of '62. He may be buried in VA, near Yorktown. |
