Conflict. Clara DePriest said, just before the note on Ella & Lulu Crowell, "Levi Crowell's 1st wife was Emma (Benson) Baxter & they gave the land for Camp Creek Lodge. (Mt Zion Methodist Church now) & then she or her husband swapped the rest of that land for the Kent land (now called the Jim Crowell place) so they could be close to Martha Simmerly who took care of the Crowell children." See 1870 census, CEMcD notes, p. 73 (Crowell/Baxter) MFDR, after the copy from the Bible, adds: "After my Uncle Nathaniel Baxter died, I think she, Emme, went to live with her Grandfather Theophilus. Did have one daughter, Flora. Emma married Levi Crowell - but Flora remained with her Grand father - Martha Simerly took care of her - She died at age 16 of T. B., buried where her Mother rests - She, Flora, was a favorite Cousin of my sister Nora. She named one of her daughters Flora Baxter." In the 1850 census, she was living with her grandfather in Butler Co., AL, and was 10 years old (James Daniel, Butler Co., AL census, beat #3, Ancestry.com) |
