Shared note

He was a school teacher, having graduated from high school in Greenville, AL. He had additional schooling in Atlanta, GA. He was a good singer and taught voice and music. He went to Texas, the area around Mexia, near Dallas. Then they went out to West Texas to found the little town of Cuthbert, in the north east corner of Mitchell County. He established a general store there, and drilled the first water well in that region.
Rowena Moitoret's Bozeman notes continue: "Meanwhile, my husband and I have done some interesting research on Susan Williams Lee Bozeman's youngest son, my grandfather, David Theophilus Bozeman. In 1886 he left Alabama and went to Texas, and he wrote letters to the editor of "The Greenville Advocate ", telling about the area where he was teaching school. These were published in the paper, and make very interesting reading nearly a hundred years later. He married in Texas and never returned to Alabama."

His obituary was printed in the Dallas Morning News, 3 Sep 1927, p. 17, D. T. Bozeman, Founder of Cuthbert, is Dead

Special to the News
Colorado, Texas, Sept. 2--West Texas lost a pioneer citizen in the death of D. T. Bozeman, 69, founder of the town of Cuthbert, twenty miles northwest of Colorado, who died in a Colorado Sanitarium. He was buried at Cuthbert. Services conducted by his son-in-law, the Rev. H. W. Hanks, pastor of Southside Methodist Church of Sweetwater, and the Rev. W. M. Elliott, a Presbyterian minister of Colorado, were held from the community church at Cuthbert which Mr. Bozeman helped to build several years ago, and of which he was a trustee.

He is survived by his wife Ellen Corley Bozeman; one son Corley Bozeman, Colorado; five daughters, Mrs. J. Brown, Colorado, Mrs. B. L. Autrey, Cuthbert; Mrs. H. W. Hanks, Sweetwater; Mrs. Charles Womack, Colorado, and Mrs. Roy D. Coles, Cuthbert.

D. T. Bozeman was a pioneer West Texan. He came to Texas in 1886 from Alabama and taught school in Central Texas counties before coming to Mitchell County in 1890, settling in the heart of ranch country northwest of Colorado. He opened a rural school there for the benefit of the ranchmen's children and in 1891 opened a store where the village of Cuthbert is now located. This was the first rural school in Mitchell County. This store is still operating and remained under his management until his death.

NOTE: Cuthbert is now a ghost town. The cemtery remains. The Bozeman graves are large tombtones withing a fenced area of the cemtery. There is a historical marker that reads:
"Founded in 1890 by D. T. Bozeman, teacher and merchant, on a main wagon road 16 miles northwest of Colorado (City). Town was named for Bozeman's neighbor, T. C. Cuthbertson. First postmaster was Mrs. Bozeman. A good well by Bozeman's store attracted freighters. First Cuthbert school opened in 1893. First rural telephone line in county was built in 1898 from Bozeman's home to Colorado (City). In 1907, Cuthbert boasted Bozeman's Store, G. W. Womack's General Store, a gin, blacksmith's shop, barber shop, church, and school. Post office closed 1959."
